The Department of Labor was established through the British Indian Act. Initially, as a state institution, its responsibility was to ensure the welfare of workers and their families and to establish good relations between workers and employers. As a result, 32 labor welfare centers have been established throughout Bangladesh.
In 1964, the Labor Welfare Center, Tongi Office Building was constructed on 0.82 acres of land at Mannunagar, Millgate, Tongi.
Since its establishment, this department has been providing free healthcare and medicine to workers and their family members working in Tongi and adjacent industrial establishments, raising awareness about family planning, distributing free birth control products, and providing recreational services to workers.
In addition, the Bangladesh Workers' Welfare Foundation Fund currently makes necessary arrangements for financial assistance for the treatment or death of workers and their family members, and for the higher education of their meritorious children.
Labor Welfare Center, Tongi, Gazipur consists of a total of 10 (working) officers and employees; where the Senior Medical Officer is the Chief Executive Officer.
